A t a Prajavani meeting held on Monday, M T Krishna Babu, Commissioner , GHMC clarified the general public’s queries about the JN NURM housing scheme and other is- sues. He said that the GHMC has constructed 56,000 houses under this particular scheme. Krishna Babu also claimed that the GHMC is facing fi- nancial problems due to the non-payment of 30% of the beneficiary contribution. In this regard, he said that he would be holding a meeting with the collectors of Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad districts in the near future.

About the housing scheme, the commissioner said that the GHMC is constructing two types of housing colonies i.e., in-situ housing (meaning wherever present colonies exist) occu- pying four people and the other, where colonies will be constructed at all the vacant lands as identified by the concerned collectors.

With regard to the Unni Kota housing colony, the commissioner said that the beneficiaries have come forward to pay their side of the contribution but the contractors are reluctant to complete the construction process. The contractors claim that the rates have increased drastically. The work that is still pending will be given to some other contractors by duly cancelling earlier contractors. The amount which is to be paid to the new contractors will be deducted from the earlier con- tractor.

Roads

The commissioner said, R&B and national highways have placed the road repairing works on high-gear for the last 3 to 4 days and have completed 60% of the road works.

He further informed that the subject of comprehensive roads design is a major issue and the GHMC is concentrating more on maintaining the standards of the roads. They are also taking up drainage improvement works in 153 stagnation points that have been identified by the traffic po- lice. The commissioner added that it has been regular practice for storm water drains to be constructed beneath roads before they are laid and it is not happening. He concluded that the GHMC is ready to take up comprehensive road improvement works with their own funds if the HMWS&SB officials submit their estimates in this regard
