Amidst fears of a “new disease” spreading fast among children that doctors describe as “viral fever,” at least two children died of diphtheria at Gopanapally of Sherlingampally mandal in Ranga Reddy district on Tuesday, while there more kids, after being quarantined, were sent to the Fever hospital, Nallakunta. According to the Superintendent, Fever Hospital, the three quarantined children tested negative, though another boy from Chaderghat, Sharukh, died on Monday night due to diphtheria. His swab test came positive.
According to health officials, another 5-6 children in Gopanapally are down with high fever and severe throat pain. A health camp has been running for the last one week in Gopanapally. Doctors from the Fever Hospital, consisting of two professors of general medicine, two junior doctors and nurses, are examining the health condition of the five children as well as other children to provide appropriate treatment.
The team, which examined 29 children in all, confirmed that some of them were suffering from ‘viral’ fever. Ganga Bhavani, DMHO, Rangareddy, said that two children died due to diphtheria -- Vaishali, age 6 and Murlidhar (Bablu) age 3. They lived in same lane of the village and the families are related.
“We have been conducting a medical camp there for the last one week. As diphtheria is an infection that can spread from droplets, it spreads fast. It’s not a new disease as everybody feared,” she said. “Vaishali was treated for diphtheria in Fever Hospital. As it was not cured, the girl lost her life. Sharukh who had been suffering from diphtheria lost his life on Monday night,” she added.
“Diphtheria is generally more prevalent in children. It is a serious bacterial infection. You can catch it from a person who has the infection if he coughs or sneezes. It usually affects the nose and throat and causes a sore throat, swollen glands, fever and chills. If it is not diagnosed properly, it can cause serious complications such as heart failure or paralysis etc.,” said Prof K Shankar.
