Janmashtami, Nandotsav and Swami Prabhupada’s birthday- it is a cluster of festivities for the devotees in the city at the ISKCON Temple which would conclude on Thursday This is one of the auspicious occasions, as people celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna on the occasion of ‘Janmashtami’. The festival is not just celebrated by the Hindus but also by people belonging to various castes and religions. One can experience the festivities at the ISKCON Temple where devotees, aged between 8 and 80, wait in long queues for the Lord’s darshan. Some even paint their faces with ‘rashakali tilaka’ and can see children dressed like Bala Krishna.

“Devotees have been pouring from as early as 4: 30 am and we have decided to keep the temple open for 23 hours. Janmashtami will be followed by Nandotsav and the birth celebrations of our founder Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada,” said Vikram, one of the volunteers at the ISKCON Temple in Abids.

On Wednesday, the temple authorities held gala celebrations with various rituals like ‘abhishekam’, a special bathing session of Lord Krishna during his birth between 9pm and 10pm. This was followed by ‘aarti’ and ‘shringar darshana’. While the devotees at ISKCON Abids will perform devotional songs, dance and other cultural activities upto Thursday, people of Sri Sri Radha Gopinath Mandir of ISKCON Secunderabad will celebrate the festival through shloka chanting and kirtanas. Devotees will also share their positive experiences after following the spiritual path of Krishna Consciousness.
Janmashtami and Nandotsav are celebrated across the country with various rituals like Rasa Lila, Dahi Handi and Bhajans. Highlighting the purpose of such occasions, priests said, “By participating in the rituals, people are taking the first step towards the spiritual journey of life,” said Mahashringadasa, chairman, ITPC, referring to the Hare Krishna Movement in the U.S in 1965, where Swami Prabhupada brought change in the lifestyle of the youth and established ISKCON.
“Following the path of Krishna Consciousness offers you the purpose of living and the path of spirituality. It is relevant in today’s world where human beings are going through depression and other negative energies,” shared Mahashringadasa, who is continuing the movement in the footsteps of Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada for the last 28 years.
Meanwhile, on the occasion of Janmashtami, a fancy dress competition was held for toddlers at Shilparamam. Over 50 children participated in the programme. The children were in the age group of 7-8 years. The fancy dress programme has been a ritual at Shilparamam every year during Janmashtami.
