A two-day national colloquium (academic conference/seminar) on Development, Social Change and Civil Society began on Tuesday at the ICSSR Guest House at Osmania University campus. This event was organised by city-based NGO, Centre for Action Research and People’s Development (CARPED) in association with Department of Sociology, Osmania University, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s College of Communication and Management and Resource for Legal Action.

Spread over three and half-day sessions, over 40 participants drawn from Charles Sturt University, Australia, Bangalore, Odisha, Jharkhand and Hyderabad will be deliberating on three main subject heads: Civil Society and Social Change in India, Identity, Marginality & Social Change, and Development - People's Agenda.

The inaugural address was delivered by noted civil society veteran, M V Sastri of Centre for World Solidarity who deliberated on the historical evolution of civil society movement and its continuing challenge in confronting the corporate society which has had a symbiotic relationship with politics and governments. “During the pre-Independence days, even Gandhiji could not do without G D Birla”, he said, emphasising his point. A striking feature of the first day activities was the overview given by journalist –turned-activist Vinod Kumar from Jharkhand who explained in Hindi about the continued plundering of tribal resources by corporates, leading to unavoidable conflicts and confrontations in the society where they inhabit.
The subsequent speakers spoke on resource conflicts and role of civil society, women empowerment and future of children among others which was received enthusiastically through interactive discussions by the audience.
