CARE Hospitals has set a new record by completing 250 kidney transplant surgeries. 55-year-old Anitha Datta from Hyderabad had undergone kidney transplantation surgery on August 28 in Care Hospitals. It is the 250th kidney transplant surgery.

The 250th transplant surgery was performed under the leadership of Dr Rajshekar Chakravarthi, Director, Division of Nephrology.“According to doctors the patient had recovered well. The large team of kidney transplant surgeons, urologists, nephrologists, anesthetists and trained nursing care in the dedicated kidney ICUs delivered good patient care before and after the transplant,” Dr Rajasekhar said.
Anitha Datta was on dialysis for the past four years and she was in dire need of a kidney transplant. After four years of dialysis, she was able to receive a cadaver kidney. The hospital also performed ‘swap’ kidney transplants and is well equipped to perform cadaver and living donor kidney transplants. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rajsekhara Chakravathi, director, division of nephrology, said “We are very excited at achieving this landmark. The 95 per cent success rate is reflection of the skills and expertise of our team as well as the excellent infrastructure available at CARE Hospitals. ”Dr P Vikrant Reddy, HOD of nephrology, opined, “With proper matching and appropriate medication, the chances of a successful transplant are good. A successful kidney transplant gives the patient strength and vitality. The patient can return to a normal life and close to a normal diet”.
“In India, about 15 or 20 people, per million, require a kidney transplant per year, which means approximately 20,000 patients require a kidney transplant a year but there are only about 700 who are undergoing the procedure due to shortage of organs. Therefore, awareness about organ donation is of immense importance,” Dr K Prasad Raju said. Dr K RamaRaju, Dr B V Rama Raju, kidney transplant surgeons and Dr TVS Gopal, chief of anesthesiology also participated and spoke on this occasion.
