Team of doctors at Beams Hospital, led by Dr Manjula Anagani, performed a unique surgery on a 19-year- old girl through Stem Cell Therapy for a disease caused in uterine layers.
The patient is a resident of Hyderabad, studying biotechnology. Endometrial line within the uterus, which helps in normal menstrual cycle in a woman, was absent congenitally in the patient. This condition is called as “Congenital Endometrial Aplasia.”
Dr Manjula and her team successfully restored her menstrual cycle through a method called Autologous stem cells, which means utilisation of individual’s stem cells for their own treatment. This kind of surgery was conducted for the first time in the country.
“With this stem cell therapy, the woman got her first menstrual cycle. The hormone treatment will be administered to the patient for another three to four cycles,” said Dr Manjula. Explaining the condition of the patient Dr Manjuala said, “Absence of endometrium is a rare condition.
This patient suffered from the condition. Ovaries and the uterus was normal. But the menstrual cycle was not. In medical terms, it is called Congenital Endometrial Aplasia.
During the procedure, the haematologist extracted the stem cells from her bone marrow and inserted them into the scraped location of endometrial lining within the uterus. Making the layer in the uterus with the help of stem cell therapy is a history in gynecology.
The endometrial lining got successfully regenerated and the female patient can now lead a normal life.” “It is simple procedure and cost effective too. Complications are literally zero. But for one year, we faced many critical situations. Social, cultural and physical stigmas also haunted the family and the girl. Endometrial lining is important for periods or reproduction in the female. The thickness of the endometrium plays an important role for fertility.
The patient had undergone different medical procedures such as traditional hormonal therapy etc but that did not give her any successful results.
Then we searched for any new way to solve her problem. At that time, we discovered this medical wonder,” she added.
