Agitation against regularisation of contract workers

  • Student leaders protest for political mileage
  • OUJAC in watch mode

Hyderabad: The ongoing protest against regularisation of contract workers at Osmania University (OU) took a new turn with political parties taking centre stage.

Students in the university are now saying that political parties were sponsoring the agitation. They lamented that politically affiliated student organisations were forcing them to participate in the protest. Recently, a student was beaten up as he refused to participate in the protest.

“It is the students who are at the receiving end. Upon a call from the parties, student union leaders are organising protests to gain political mileage,” said K Ravi Kumar, a student from OU.

It is learnt that political parties are offering jobs to student leaders who are actively taking part in the agitation.Earlier, a member of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) OU was given the post of spokesperson of the Congress party for heading the protest against regularisation of contract workers.

“It is right of the student organisations to protest against the government’s decision. It was because of the students that Telangana was achieved and not by the contract workers. CM K Chandrasekhar Rao has not recognised the contribution of the students in the Telangana struggle,” said K Manavath Roy, president, Telangana Unemployed Youth Joint Action Committee.

On the other side, Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OUJAC), which spearheaded Telangana movement, is nowhere seen in any of the protest called by the student organisations.

A member of OUJAC, on condition of anonymity, said that NSUI, ABVP, TNSF organisations, which are affiliated to the political parties are taking the movement forward for their existence.

“Whenever money flows into their pockets from their respective parties, protests are being held in the campus and today’s protest in the campus is a testimonial,” he said.

Bhaskar, a member of OUJAC, said that they were in watch mode as the government was new in the State.

“Student leaders with political mileage are taking it forward. We do not want to be involved. However, if government does not issue notification for jobs we will start an agitation,” he added.

M Krishank, spokesperson, OUJAC, said that it was not the right time to start a mass protest against regularisation by OUJAC.

“We will take up protest for grieved students not for political reasons,” he said.
