Line Hoven learned art under Anke Feuchtenberger in Hamburg. Some time back she created a book representing real family members and titled it ‘Love Looks Away’. Her parents and grandparents are from Germany and America. “There are many things that one would like to convey about relationships. Less spoken and better reflected through graphics. These are things that are left behind in our lives and need to be brought back from the past,” she says.

Recently Line visited New Delhi to participate in a unique project. “It’s like a ‘speed dating concept’. The artists sit in a room and the audience moves from room to room meeting different artists to know more about their work. For me, India is a bubble of energy. Some of the patterns would definitely reflect in my future artwork.

Indian people are very much centred on religion and food,” Line shares and adds, “Recently, I came to know many things about the Gods like Ganesha and Hanuman. As far as censorship is concerned, I feel that every person has a right to freedom. It’s very important to know where the ‘border’ lies. After all, art is such a medium to expression thoughts and maybe also to bring forth many unspoken words.”

Line states that graphic art has not remained static over the past. “Today, the graphic art scene is undergoing a tremendous change. Once upon a time, the ‘masters’ of this art had a very traditional style. Then we have artists from our generation who started ‘telling stories’ via this medium. Today, the younger generation is creating something totally different.

At first sight, the drawings may look very funny or meaningless; but a deeper insight into the work would reveal a really tough process behind these works. But anyway, somehow I am not convinced to take up this modern form of art which is also surprisingly becoming popular by the day. I really can’t scratch that way! It’s not easy to make a living out of art. It’s a constant challenge. Comic books with graphic art are not much of a commercial proposition and most of my earnings come from commissioned works of art,” she informs.
