Secretariat: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had recently installed nearly 45 e-toilets across the city, out of which 25 are She toilets. The She toilets located at Secretariat, NTR Gardens and opposite Lumbini Park are not functioning properly due to negligent workers.

The She toilet doors open only when one inserts a coin, but if there is no water supply the doors are locked automatically and do not accept the coin.

According to GHMC official, the 25 units are installed at zoo park, Koti, Lingampally bus stop, Uppal x road, Sundarah Park, Chandanagar, but site confirmation is still pending at, Suchitra Balaji hospital, Beramguda Kaman, ECIL bus stop, AS Rao Nagar and IS Sadan.

K Chandra, a vendor near the famed NTR Gardens said, “One man comes on the bike and opens the back door and switches on the power at 4:00 pm or 5:00 pm. The toilets are locked till the man visits to turn on the power, many women come here but as the doors are locked they return.”

P Rama a sugarcane vendor said, “The toilets were installed 15 days back, but whenever I insert a coin, it comes back due to lack of water. I finally gave up after trying for the past three days. The GHMC workers came today and filled the water in the morning.” She added that the idea is helpful to many women but if the toilets are functioning regularly then it will help women otherwise it is of no use, she added.

GHMC Additional Commissioner B Manohar said, “All the toilets are working in proper condition as there is water connection and we are planning to give permissions for sumps to avoid any water problem. The 24-hours toilets are for the public and the civic body is planning to keep a women employee to look after the toilets. She can collect the money generated and it creates self-employment for women.”

Meanwhile, the GHMC has a total of 45 e-Toilets units in the city, 14 units are open for public, 9 units are yet to get utility connections from GHMC, four units are ready for inauguration, seven units site confirmation are still pending from sponsors and for two units work is under progress.
