Hyderabad: More than a century old, Surabhi Theatre played compendiums from Indian mythology. Combining craft, music, magic, puppetry with extraordinary makeup and costumes, these plays represent a unique facet of India’s theatrical traditions.

The group performed the celebrated play ‘Maya Bazaar’ at the second edition of Serendipity Arts Festival Goa. The performance was based from Hindu mythology which also depicted the present social scenario in the country. It not only kept the audiences engrossed in their captivating performance but also received a well-deserved standing ovation.

‘Maya Bazaar’ is regarded as the masterpiece of Surabhi Theatre. This production narrated the love story of Sasirekha, daughter of Balarama and Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadra. Surabhi Theatre is a family theatre group based in Hyderabad. The group performs plays based on stories from Hindu mythology and the Puranas.

When the family started growing in numbers, the daughters with their husbands started establishing their own theatre groups. The fifth daughter, Subhadramma and her husband R Venkatarao established Venkateshwara Natya Mandali (Surabhi) in the year 1937 at Gividipeta Village of Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh.

The wife and husband were assisted by their children, Dasaradhirao, Bhojaraju, Nageswararao (Babji), Ganapathi Rao.The theatre group started growing and is now one of the biggest surviving groups with 55 members. Subhadramma has specialized in doing male roles, particularly the character like Duryodhana in Mahabharat.
