Hyderabad: The recent fire at the Central Zone RTA office at Khairatabad has not made a difference to the authorities as none of the RTAs in Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad have fire safety equipment.Except three RTA offices, all others are rented but even the government ones do not have the equipment.

The fire accident was in the first floor of the old building and the reason attributed was short circuit because of the old wiring system. The official sources said that there were not even basic equipment to tackle fire in any of the RTA offices in the city showing the lack of readiness to tackle the crisis situation.

A senior official told The Hans India that the reason for lack of fire safety measures was because most of the offices are on rented premises, the responsibility lies with the owner of the premises. However, this version of rented premises is not supported by the auto union leaders as they point out that the Khairatabad office was not on rented premises and it is owned by the department.

The union leaders alleged that because of the lackadaisical attitude of the department, important files were gutted, which are needed at one point of time. The leader asked that if some motorist wants a copy of NOC lost, where the department would get it from.

Telangana Auto and Motor Welfare Union general secretary M Dayanand said that how can the fire department give permission to the offices without verifying the fire safety norms. He said that it is the responsibility of the department to have all types of fire safety equipment and also said that the motorists cannot be held liable for the mistake of the officials.

Joint Transport Commissioner C Ramesh said that the fire accident was in the old building and it was because of the old wiring. He said that the department now has directed the offices in the state to have fire safety equipment like fire extinguishers and other necessary equipment. The department would make sure the offices are ready to tackle any untoward incident.
