Mahbubnagar: The 111th birth anniversary of Babu Jagjivan Ram was celebrated with fervour in Gadwal, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool and Mahbubnagar in erstwhile Mahbubnagar district on Thursday.
In Mahbubnagar, MLA Srinivas Goud along with Zilla Parishad Chairman Bhandari Bhaskar, leaders of various Dalit organisations, and district officials took part in the birth celebrations of Babu Jagjivan ram and garlanded his statue at Telangana Chowrasta. Later a meeting was organised in Ambedkar Bhavan in the district.
Speaking on the occasion, Srinivas Goud said, “Babu Jagjivan Ram was a great leader who worked for the upliftment of Dalits and downtrodden during independent India. Moving on the same path, the TRS government has also launched various schemes and taken initiatives for the welfare of SCs in the district.”
In Gadwal, District Collector Rajat Kumar Saini, along with Superintendent of Police Rema Rajeshwari, Gadwal MLA D K Aruna, accompanied by various leaders of various associations took part in the birth celebrations by lighting the lamp and garlanding the statue of Babu Jagjivan Ram. While speaking on the occasion Aruna said that Babu Jagjivan Ram was a great freedom fighter and leader of independent India who fought for the rights of poor Dalits and downtrodden in the society.
“Though we have brought many laws to protect the interests of Dalits and upliftment of the downtrodden, they are not being implemented effectively. Even today the Dalits are facing social boycott. The literacy rate among Dalits is very low in the erstwhile Mahbubnagar district.
It is high time that the government implemented the SC sub-plan in its true spirit and extended the welfare benefits to them by fully spending the amount allocated for their upliftment,” said the Gadwal MLA.District Collector Rajat Kumar Saini recalled that Babu Jagjivan Ram had fought for equality of Dalits and downtrodden in the society.
He said, “We need to take inspiration from Babu Jagjivan Ram and ensure all the SCs and STs first focus on education. One can achieve development, equality and financially stronger only with education.” The Collector said the Gadwal district stands first in the State in the implementation of distribution of three acre land to the Dalits.
Rema Rajeshwari said Jagjivan Ram was instrumental in ensuring that the Constitutional rights for the Dalits and downtrodden were implemented. It is time that the SCs and STs utilised those rights and benefit from the schemes and programmes initiated by the government.
In Kalwakurthy mandal of Nagarkurnool district, Irrigation Minister Harish Rao, Health Minister C Laxma Reddy, Achampet MLA Guvvala Balaraju, and others garlanded the photo of Babu Jagjivan Ram at Ambedkar chowk and recalled the great works done for uplifting the deprived classes in the country.
