Malakpet : With the practice of people sprucing up their houses with furnishings for the Eid-ul-Fitr on conclusion of the holy month of Ramzan, carpet sellers from ‘Carpet City’, Bhadohi (UP), now dot the stretch on the Government Printing Press road near Chanchalguda Jail. Colourful carpets mostly manufactured in UP lure customers who take the route of Nalgonda x road towards Saidabad and Santoshnagar.
Carpets have been historically used as luxury product, but slowly it has assumed a necessity in almost all the households, particularly in the Cities like Hyderabad, where nawabi culture still exists. Artisans of Bhadohi, the city from where carpets across India are being supplied attract the attention of the shoppers who are gearing up to celebrate the important festival ‘Eid-ul-Fitr’ within next 10 days.
Finding this to be an important season to sell most of the carpets, businessmen like Naushad Ali is on a visit to Hyderabad, to make some good profits. Traditionally this has been a family business of Naushad, who sells carpets made in UP and Kashmir known for its elegance. “Carpets are woven by hand but nowadays are made by using machine. Earlier, the carpets were made using polyester or nylon in UP. But slowing due to the growing demand these are also made with wool procured from Kashmir. The carpets are also made of camel and sheep wool and acrylic wool,” he explained.
Carpets are generally used for covering of floor, which not only adds to the aesthetics of a house but also insulates a person’s feet from cold tiles or rough concrete floorings. Besides acting as a decorative mat, the carpet makes room more comfortable place to sit and relax.
According to businessmen, it takes more than a month to complete a carpet, if woven by hand and it depends on their size. The machine woven carpet is made within 1 or 2 days. Sizes of both handmade and machine ranges from 3ft × 5ft to 9ft ×12ft. While the price of these carpets ranges from Rs 600 to Rs 12000 depending on their size. “Carpets are available in many colours, but the demand of maroon and red is high, it's referred by customers as ‘Red Carpet’,” added Naushad.
