Mallapur: Two new borewells at Pittala Basthi is enough to change the lives of 4,000-odd slum dwellers. “It just needs a bit of effort. What we are asking is just water for washing and cleaning. These two borewells will make a huge difference in our lives,” said Ravi, a slum dweller soon after the inauguration by corporator Pannala Devender Reddy here on Thursday.

Recently, the government allotted drinking water connections to those who had a minimum area of 125 sq yards. Majority of the slum dwellers at Pittala Basthi received the connections but were worried as the two old borewells almost dried up. Fatima, a resident shared, “We were extremely happy to receive drinking water connections but with the borewells drying up this summer we had to go faraway to fetch water.”

The two new borewells cost Rs 4 lakh. The corporator said that with officials’ co-operation they started borewell works to avoid water problem to the residents of the locality. Officials said that small water tanks would be constructed so that water could be stored and there would be no problem for people to fetch water from far off places.

Municipality assistant engineer Venkatesh, ward member Srinivas Goud, local leaders Madhusudhan, Sudarshan, Nagaraj, Praveen, Ramulu, Srinivas were present.
