Irrigation minister T Harish Rao felicitated Dr P Raghu Ram, director and consultant oncoplatic breast surgeon, KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, on Monday. It was announced last month that Dr Rahgu would be conferred with the Padma Shri by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapathi Bhavan in March or April.

It was announced last month that Dr Rahgu would be conferred with the Padma Shri by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapathi Bhavan in March or April.

Dr Raghu Ram is the youngest surgeon from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to be selected for the prestigious award since its institution. The doctor is also the President-elect of the Association of Breast Surgeons of India. He is amongst the very few in the world to have acquired prestigious FRCS from all four Surgical Royal Colleges in British Isles (London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ireland) and FACS from the American College of Surgeons.

He is also the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious Overseas Gold Medal (2013) conferred by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in the 508 years history of the College. Commenting on Dr Raghu Ram’s achievement, B Krishnaiah, chairman, KIMS Group, said, “We are proud of our doctors who have been striving for the greater quality healthcare each and every day. Dr Raghu Ram is the second doctor from our hospital to be chosen for this coveted award after Dr Sahariah, who was bestowed with Padma Shri in 2014.”

Chief cardiothoracic surgeon Dr B Bhaskar Rao, managing director and CEO, KIMS, said, “Dr Raghu Ram’s contribution to the society in general and KIMS in specific is invaluable. His initiatives such as population based breast cancer screening programme stands as an example to his responsibility towards the society.” Padmabhushan awardee Padmanabhaiah, dean, Sri Chaitanya IAS Academy, and Padma Shri awardees Prof. Kakarla Subba Rao and Ananda Shakar Jayant, along with Jayesh Ranjan, MD, TSIDC were present at the event.

A visibly elated Dr Raghu Ram said that he was humbled and honoured to be chosen for the award and stated that he would dedicate the award to his mother and those women of the country who conquered breast cancer.
