New Delhi: After unveiling the agenda to curb corruption and inflation, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday trained her guns at the Opposition BJP for its poor track-record on fighting corruption. After putting in place the framework of measures to fight corruption, Sonia Gandhi challenged the BJP, which takes the moral high ground, to take credible action to fight corruption in the BJP-ruled States, as well. Smarting under the string of scandals and scams, the Congress was quick to come up with corrective actions, but the BJP-ruled States of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have persistently refused to take any action against their Ministers faced with corruption charges.
These included Gujarat Ministers Babu Bokhiria and Purushottam Solanki. In Madhya Pradesh, there are 16 Ministers against whom corruption cases are pending with the Lokayukta. The BJP Government in Madhya Pradesh has not given permission for their prosecution.
After the Congress flag-hoisting at the AICC headquarters at 24, Akbar Road in the Capital, on the occasion of 128th Congress Foundation, Sonia Gandhi said, “I would ask the media to please look at other States, led by other parties, to also do something about corruption in their own State Governments, particularly amongst some of their Ministers.” Without naming the BJP, Sonia Gandhi referred to the BJP Governments in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, where Ministers continue in office, inspite of grave corruption charges. Sonia Gandhi said, “Look at us, by all means and point out our mistakes, but do look at others, also.”
When mediapersons pressed further for her response on Adarsh scam, Sonia Gandhi said, “I think the point has been missed of yesterday’s meeting. The Congress Chief Ministers Conference was on the Lokpal and on inflation. The discussions during the meeting centred around how the Chief Ministers could, what legislations or what actions they take, to fight corruption and inflation.”
