The crisis started since Thursday night after militants from the militant outfit NDFB belonging to its Songbijit faction, went on a killing spree attacking innocent villagers in the BTAD, and according to government figures till now over 20 people, mostly belonging to the minority community have been killed.

4 districts—Kokrajhar, Baksha, Chirang and Udalguri are located in the BTAD, and Kokrajhar serves as the headquarter.

All the political parties—BJP, and the regional parties AGP and the AIUDF are gunning for the Congress led government and have are also demanding immediate resignation of the chief minister.

“This congress led government has been a failure in every aspect, and the chief minister should resign immediately. Also president’s rule should be imposed in the state at the earliest,” said Assam BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal.

The district administrations have imposed indefinite curfew in the entire Kokrajhar district and the violence-hit areas of Baksa and Chirang districts.

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi when approached said that the situation will be brought under control and will be dealt with firmly, but ruled out that he will resign.

Speaking to media persons, the chief minister said that he has already got in touch with the Union home ministry which will be sending 1000 paramilitary troops to the violence hit areas at the earliest.

Gogoi, who also holds the home portfolio said that the Assam Police has been instructed to deal firmly with the situation, and have also asked senior police officials to take sector-wise responsibility for maintenance of law and order in BTAD areas.

Speaking to Hans India, Khagen Sarma, director general of the Assam Police, confirmed that militants of the anti-talks faction of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) were behind the killings, and added that the situation will be brought under control soon.

Meanwhile, BTAD chief Hagrama Mohilary has strongly condemned the killings and appealed for peace and harmony in the area, and also announced Rs 1 lakh compensation to the next kin of each victim’s family and Rs 50,000 to those who were injured in the incidents.

Besides this, the Army has staged flag marches to instil confidence among the people in the violence affected places and to bring the situation under control.
