Out of 24 years of service, a teacher was absent for 23years. Sangeeta Kashyap was recruited as a biology teacher in the central state of Madhya Pradesh in 1990.
Ms.Kashyap is thought to have set an Indian record for staff absenteeism. Initially she was teaching in town of Dewas, after 3 years of maternity leave she was transferred to a school in Indore where she never turned up for work.
She is listed as an employee however; the school authorities are clueless when the teacher was last paid salary. The school is allowed to have three biology teachers, but only two are filled - with the third held by the absentee teacher. State education officials said that the teacher would be terminated her from the post. Absenteeism is an invasive problem in government-run schools in India
