Mumbai: BJP national president Amit Shah was discharged in the case of the alleged fake encounter killings of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kausar Bi and Tulsiram Prajapati, a witness, here on Tuesday. A special CBI court ruled that there was insufficient evidence against Shah in the case dating to 2005 and 2006, pertaining to the incidents which occurred when he was the Gujarat home minister.

Reacting to the development, Rubabuddin Sheikh, brother of deceased Sohrabuddin, said that he would appeal against the order in the Bombay High Court. The BJP termed Shah's discharge in the fake encounter case as a "victory of truth and a vindication" of its stand that the Congress had "misused" the CBI against its opponents for political gains and asked Sonia Gandhi to apologise to the nation.

Meanwhile, the Congress described as "strange and worrisome" the court discharging the BJP chief in the case and alleged that there was "government pressure" on a "chained, caged and totally immobilised" CBI. Recalling that there was earlier a judicial order that Shah should be kept away from Gujarat as he can influence the investigations, party spokesperson Ajoy Kumar wondered "suddenly you find that there has been a total u-turn...suddenly he is exonerated."

Slamming the CBI, the Aam Aadmi Party said there were "glaring discrepancies" in what is in the chargesheet and way the case was argued before the court. “’It is nothing but a "blatant" and "open" misuse of country's premiere agency,” AAP said. The CBI has said it would study the court order before taking further steps in the matter.
