Muslim Tenants Not Allowed In This Mumbai Apartment, Broker Seeks NOC. Twenty-five-year-old Misbah Quadri, who has alleged that she was forced to vacate her rented home in a Mumbai building because she was a Muslim, said Wednesday that the broker involved in the rental agreement process, had asked her for a No Objection Certificate to safeguard himself, the owner of the flat and the builder from harassment charges.

Mumbai: Twenty-five-year-old Misbah Quadri, who has alleged that she was forced to vacate her rented home in a Mumbai building because she was a Muslim, said Wednesday that the broker involved in the rental agreement process, had asked her for a No Objection Certificate to safeguard himself, the owner of the flat and the builder from harassment charges.

"I was living in Sanghvi Heights building at Wadala East and I was asked to leave after a week. They told me Sanghvi Heights does not allow Muslim tenants. Just before I moved in, I was told by the broker that Muslim tenants won't be allowed. Then, I said, that I am willing to give in writing that I won't cook certain food and other such things," Quadri told ANI here.

Quadri, who has been living in Mumbai for the past five years, further claimed that the broker then asked her to give a No Objection Certificate, saying that he, the owner and the builder would not be held responsible should she face harassment because of her religion.

" I was looking for a PG, the broker asked me if I wear Muslim clothes like burqa. When I said no, then, he said it was fine and he won't tell others that I am a Muslim," she added.

Quadri said that she was planning to file a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission.

"Most of my friends are Hindus and when they saw me facing a problem like this, they came out to support me. They have told me to go to the NHRC and file a complaint. It is in process right now," said Quadri.

Meanwhile, Sanghvi Heights supervisor Rajesh has rubbished Quadri's charges and said that Muslims are allowed to stay in the building.

"We allow Muslim people to stay here. The broker should be asked about the matter. The problem seems to be between the girl and the broker. I don't have any idea about this," he said.

Recently, a young job applicant from Mumbai was rejected by a jewellery exports company in the city on grounds that he was a Muslim and was told that it hired 'only non-Muslim candidates'.

The applicant, Zeeshan Khan, later filed a police complaint against the company, which issued a clarification saying the episode was an error and not their policy.
