Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Amma J Jayalalithaa is known for her innovative schemes and initiatives for up lifting the poor and weaker section of people in the society. Many of her schemes were even studied by several world leaders in order to implement in their own countries.

The recent initiative of Amma J Jalayalithaa ‘Amma Mapperu Sanjeevi’ (providing a pack of 11 herbal medicines for expectant mothers) announced in the assembly on Tuesday – ‘Siddha way to further improve maternal and child care in Tamil Nadu’ deserve huge applaud and appreciation.
Under the above scheme, the popular herbs such as Curry leaf powder, Gooseberry, Pomegranate etc., will be distributed to pregnant women in the state. The herbs are given to improve the immunity of pregnant women during ante natal and post delivery stage. Through PHC’s and Government Hospitals, the above herbal kit is proposed to be distributed across the state. The annual outlay of the project is 10 crore.
The above scheme is not just welfare centric, it is quite intelligent and insightful as well. The scheme will certainly benefit the poor people in the rural areas. Besides that, it also helps in promoting ISM, especially Siddha system well within its tenets and fundamentals.

By including the most common herbs like Curry leaf powder, Gooseberry, Pomegranate etc., under ‘Amma Mapperu Sanjeevi’, the common people can easily associate Siddha system with most common herbs and its paramedical approaches.

Most of our common ailments are self limiting in nature. Strict discipline in diet and life style changes itself may help in curing most of our common ailments and drug intervention is not required. The paramedical approaches of ISM will certainly help in correcting many such minor health problems.

It appears, the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Amma J Jayalalithaa has clearly understood the tenets of ISM. Promoting ISM for

1. Wellness
2. Home-Health Care
3. Post-Medical Management

would certainly ensure better services of ISM to humanity. ISM should not be promoted as system of medicine like allopathic system. ISM is meant for paramedical benefits and not for cure. None of the ISM products qualify the global definition of drug.

ISM is comprehensive and all inclusive paramedical wellness based approach for the mind and body. The institutionally qualified Siddha and ISM practitioners are in real sense ‘Healers’ than ‘Doctors’. Their role is different from that of MBBS doctors.

ISM and Siddha healers possess the unique distinction of having adequate knowledge in offering mind healing, spiritual practices, providing correct diet regimen according the constitution of each individual, providing moral and ethical code to people etc. That is how they enjoy the coveted title ‘ISM healers’.

If Government understand this aspect of ISM and promote ISM as healing, wellness based paramedical science and impress the glory and essence of the title - ISM healers among the large section of institutionally qualified ISM private practitioners who are inclined to practice allopathic drugs albeit legally and illegally, ISM and Siddha system has promising future.

The state like Jammu and Kashmir has already recognized the role of ISM for providing wellness to people who suffer from life style disorders. For treating diseases, certainly allopathic system stands first.

By recognizing the importance of Curry leaves, Gooseberry, Pomegranate, ginger, pepper etc., the ISM private practitioners can easily build their practice by using the home remedies of ISM instead of engaging in quackery or cross-pathy.

The new scheme of Amma J Jayalalithaa provides sufficient insight to common man to associate ISM to the most common herbs like curry leaves, Gooseberry, Pomegranate, ginger, pepper etc., and their usefulness. Such awareness of the common man would prevent the ISM practitioners to prescribe allopathic drugs.

We need ISM for paramedical benefits and allopathic system for treating and curing diseases. ISM should be handled by ISM experts and allopathic system by duly qualified MBBS doctors. Cross pathy will not solve either the shortages of qualified MBBS medical doctors in rural India or the multitude of health problems in India. Hence the shortcut approach in health care system should not be adopted.
