"This is the national highway of development... It will emerge as a major factor for development of western Uttar Pradesh," Modi said. Modi said the people in the villages aspire for good roads, as they know it is the key to development. "The villagers know if they want development, they first need connectivity through good roads," he said.

Modi also mentioned the Golden Quadrilateral project of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, and also the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.

Remembering the 1857 uprising in Meerut, the Prime Minister said the Rs 7,566-crore expressway will show a way to freedom from pollution. "Meerut is specially remembered for 1857 freedom movement. In 1857, it showed the way to freedom from slavery and today Delhi-Meerut expressway is showing the (way to) freedom from pollution," Modi said. Apart from satellite township, "weekend tourism" was bound to grow as middle class and upper middle class preferred going on family outings on weekends, he added.
