​Kolkata: In a novel method to prevent its newly-elected MLAs from defecting to the Trinamool Congress, as is widely speculated, Bengal Congress president Adhir Chowdhury recently proposed the 44 legislators sign affidavit declaring they would not leave the party.

And all the newly-elected Congress MLAs in West Bengal have signed a written declaration on a stamp paper asserting that they would not leave the party. They have given an undertaking not to make any anti-party remarks too.

The Congress has often been accused of silencing dissenters within the party. Vowing to support the party decisions, the newly-elected members have affirmed that they would resign from the Assembly membership before opposing any decisions taken by the party leadership.
