Washington : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has big plans in the United States during his latest visit starting Monday, even as President Barack Obama is looking forward to discussing a number of issues including security and defence cooperation, economic growth priorities and climate change with the Indian leader during his visit here.

"The visit will highlight the deepening of the US-India relationship in key areas since the President's visit to New Delhi in January 2015," White House Deputy Press Secretary Jennifer Friedman said. "Among the issues that the President looks forward to discussing are progress made on climate change and clean energy partnership, security and defence cooperation, and economic growth priorities," Friedman said.

"There is a whole host of issues where our relationship and partnership is robust and important-everything ranging from climate to military steps we're taking, to a whole host of economic steps that we're working on together," she said. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to arrive in Washington DC on June 6 on a three-day visit.

Monday: Modi will lay a wreath at the Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington Virginia, according to a briefing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After this, there will be two events at Blair House, the presidential guest residence, where Modi will be staying: a meeting with heads of American think tanks and a function for the repatriation of some cultural antiquities that are in the US.

“There are a number of very important antiquities which would be coming back,” said Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. June 7: Modi will meet with Obama and then attend a lunch hosted by Obama. In the evening, Modi will meet with US business leaders, to encourage them to invest to India. Between these two events, US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter will call on Modi, according to Jaishankar.

June 8: Modi will address a joint meeting of the US Congress. He will be the fifth Indian prime minister of India to do so. Jaishankar said he couldn’t predict what Modi would say to US lawmakers, but expects thank them for the “very consistent support that we’ve got from the US Congress.” Modi’s address will be followed by lunch. Later, there will be a reception by the India caucus. That afternoon, Modi will fly to Mexico, where he will have dinner with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.
