Madurai:Madurai is all set for a civic makeover, with the inauguration of two electronic public toilets in the Meenakshi Temple park area.

The eToilets were inaugurated on Wednesday by Mayor Thiraviam and the Commissioner Sandeep Nanduri. The eToilets are part of Madurai Corporation’s efforts to promote ideals of cleanliness and hygiene.

The corporation has plans to install eToilets in 20 more locations in the city after the local body elections.

The sensor-based eToilets, manufactured by Thiruvananthapuram-based Eram Scientific Solutions, are completely automated and unmanned and are integrated with user-friendly electronic interfaces. They feature self-cleaning mechanism, such as automatic pre-flush/after-flush, automatic platform cleaning, and automatic lights. The eToilets are programmed to turn on the lights and fan when a user enters, flush 1.5 litres of water after the first three minutes and 4.5 litres after a little longer and clean the floor after every ten users.

“Eram’s e-toilets have remote monitoring capabilities with electrical, mechanical and web-mobile technologies incorporated. The entry, usage, and cleaning of e-toilets are remote-controlled and monitored. It is heartening that Madurai has adopted eToilets to cater to the large number of visitors and public who swarm the Meenakshi Temple. eToilets are ideal for places like this which are frequented by huge number of visitors. Already, the temple town of Thirupathi has installed Eram’s eToilets for public usage. The Madurai Corporation has asked us to provide disabled-friendly eToilets as well, which we will install in due course,” said Bincy Baby, Director at Eram.

Eram has installed more than 1600 eToilets in 19 states across India.
