Bijapur (Chhattisgarh): A strong posse of 350 CRPF personnel appears to be extensively combing every inch of the Dandakaranya region in Sukma and Bijapur districts of the neighbouring Chhattisgarh state for the Maoists.
In what could be described as a major retaliation, an exchange of fire said to have taken place with the ultras during the past 72 hours in which the CRPF jawans reportedly killed 20 Maoists.
The situation in the Dandakaranya region represents that of a war zone with the gun-toting CRPF personnel looking for the Maoists and helicopters hovering above bringing in supplies–food, weapons and ammunition.
The Centre as well as Chhattisgarh appears to have taken a serious view of the Maoist attack at Kalapathar in Sukma district in which 25 jawans were killed.
Earlier, in another incident, the Maoists claimed the lives of 12 CRPF personnel. With the Centre reportedly sending strong feelers that the CRPF should march forward with only one objective of weeding out the Maoists, combing for the ultras was stepped up in the Dandakaranya region.
The police on Tuesday confirmed that there were many exchanges of fire between the security forces and the Maoists leading to death of over 20 Maoists. At Chintalnaar in Sukma district, eight Maoists were apprehended.
CRPF director-general Chauhan told media on Tuesday that the Maoists came down heavily on the CRPF personnel in Bijapur district seriously wounding the jawans–Raju Kundal, Suresh Mandaal and Salad Upadhay – who have been immediately air-lifted to get them admitted to a hospital.
To distract the CRPF personnel attention, the Maoists have donned the uniform of the elite anti-Maoist commando squad Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) shedding their olive-green uniforms.
