New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi assured the party leaders here on Wednesday that the party would not extend support to any move to increase the number of Assembly constituencies in the two Telugu States.
Referring to the demand of the ruling parties in AP and Telangana, Rahul Gandhi told the delegation that both the Chief Ministers were seeking a fresh delimitation of the Assembly segments only to accommodate those leaders who had defected unethically into the ruling parties. He assured the delegation of the Godavari Mega Park Victims Association that he would raise the issue in Parliament.
Speaking to the media here on Wednesday after meeting Rahul Gandhi, APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy said they had explained to Rahul Gandhi that the BJP leadership too seemed to be in favour of it going by the ‘enthusiasm’ displayed by Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu in announcing repeatedly the Centre's willingness in this regard.
Venkaiah Naidu should stop encouraging unparliamentary and undemocratic moves of the two Chief Ministers for petty political gains, Raghuveera said adding that Naidu should concentrate on securing Special Category Status to AP and fulfil the promises made during the bifurcation of the state. The APCC president also led a delegation of the 'Victims Association of Godavari Mega Acqua Park' - this included, surprisingly, TDP MPTC Javvadi Satyanarayana of Tundurru - to Rahul Gandhi.
The delegation sought Gandhi's support in its fight against the Mega Park in Parliament and prevent setting up of the Aqua Park as it would lead to large-scale pollution of both drinking and irrigation water.
The park, coming up in between in the residential areas of Tundurru, Jonnalagaruvu and Kamsalibethapudi villages of Bhimavaram mandal of West Godavari district with 25-tonne capacity, would play havoc with the lives of lakhs of people.
It was coming up in violation of all environmental and safety norms and would affect the population of at least 30 villages directly while others in the district also would be indirectly affected due to groundwater pollution.
