Y. S Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSRCP Going Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam Way?. When Jagan Mohan Reddy, son of late YS Rajasekhar Reddy decided to enter active politics after his father's death, no one took him seriously. Many felt he has taken this step to protect his business interests which his father did earlier. However, when he tried taking on all the powerful forces including the Congress High Command, people of Andhra Pradesh felt that Jagan may soon emerge as a powerful leader in the state. The surveys conducted by various media channels added fuel to fire. When many Congress leaders came with statements that Jagan will join hands with Congress once again after elections, and may merge his party YSRCP, people did not really believe it.
All the surveys carried out by various media channels, right after the launch of YSRCP launch, pointed to a clean sweep in Andhra Pradesh for the party, Many analysts felt that if TRS and Telangana issue didn't exist, the party would have swept Telangana too. Three years have passed since and after Jagan went and came out of jail, lot of changes have taken place which has changed the political situation in Andhra Pradesh. Now, it appears as if the YSRCP is losing ground even though at the time Jagan remained in jail, his sister Sharmila ensured the party's victory in the by-elections after she undertook the arduous Maro Praja Prasthanam padayatra, a repeat of her father YSR's padayatra Praja Prasthanam.
Many felt that people got fed up with his prolonged odarpu yatra. But the YSRCP did not take any of those surveys seriously branding them as fake surveys carried out by yellow media and his opponents to bring down their moral. But much to their shock the internal surveys that they conducted delivered same results shocking them all. Below are the results of the survey which showed the constant decline in the party's vote share in all the three regions.
Region/ Vote Share | 2009 | 2011 | 2013 |
Telangana | 40 | 44 | 15 |
Rayalaseema | 52 | 48 | 29 |
Coastal Andhra | 47 | 55 | 28 |
This is a shocker since many expected Jagan to sweep Seemandhra after he has taken Samaikyandhra stand. Political analysts say Congress leaders and his key aid in the Congress party, Sabbam Hari is making some shocking exposures on Jagan's promised support to Congress and Sonia Gandhi at Centre after next elections increased suspicions among people denting the party's credibility. Many feel Jagan launched his party too soon and the party is losing its steam. Now with Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy expected to launch his own party, people's interest have drifted away from YSRCP.
Many feel Jagan's YSRCP will meet the same fate as that of Mega Star Chiranjeevi's party Praja Rajyam. When Chiranjeevi launched his party just before 2004 elections, lot of hype was created and politicians from all parties joined Praja Rajyam. The party was expected to come to power but instead it spoiled the chances of main opposition party TDP. Praja Rajyam won 18 seats and won a handsome share. However, those MLAs couldn't digest the fact that they have to spend time without power. Life became difficult for Prajarajyam and Chiranjeevi unable to run the party finally merged with Congress, for which he was rewarded a berth in the Union Cabinet.
Everyone knows Jagan came out of the party to become chief minister. If he cannot come to power this time, he and his party leaders will be left with no choice but to accept the bitter truth and be game to make compromises with the Congress party. One must not forget that the CBI cases too are hanging like a sword of Damocles. This makes his position even more dangerous than mega star Chiranjeevi. In the upcoming elections for Jagan to make his presence felt should do exceedingly well as his party is wiped out in Telangana after his united Andhra Pradesh stand.
Jagan used to enjoy good support in Telangana but after his change of stand just like Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam, all his supporters deserted him. Strong leaders like Konda Surekha, her husband Konda Murali, party spokesperson Bajireddy Goverdhan, A Indrakaran Reddy, K K Mahender Reddy and Jitta Balakrishna Reddy have already bid adieu to the party. Now, with his party losing ground in Seemandhra too, many say YSRCP going the PRP way is a mere formality. Some people say as long Andhra Pradesh remains united, it doesn't matter for them . But people of Andhra Pradesh who are saddened by politicians kneeling before Sonia Gandhi and other high command leaders who were defeated in their respective states, and hoping powerful leaders to restore the pride and dignity, will be saddened by these developments.
