Guntur: There was air of surcharged expectancy and vibrant atmosphere in the town, thanks to a sporting event that could develop into a vibrant spectacle in course of time.The very fact that the inaugural edition of Amaravathi Hockey Super League was to be launched at BR Stadium was reason enough for the optimists to take delight here on Sunday.
In the league opener, Anantapur defeated Nellore 4-1 while Chittoor drew 1-all with AP Police Hockey XI. However, the Vishakhapatnam and Income Tax Hyderabad match was stopped due to bad light.
Earlier S Khader Rehman, Commissioner of Customs Andhra Pradesh inaugurated the tournament. Hockey Andhra Pradesh chairman CPK Dutt and general secretary M Niranjan Reddy were also present on the occasion.
General Secretary of Telangana Hockey and triple Olympian N Mukesh Kumar, who was the guest, appreciated the efforts being taken to promote the sport in all corners of Andhra Pradesh.
Results: Anantapur 4 bt Nellore 1; Chittoor 1 drew with AP Police Hockey XI 1.
