Google has officially announced that the next major version of Android will be called Android 5.0 Lollipop. Google describes this release as the company’s “most ambitious release” with over 5,000 new APIs for developers.

Google says that Lollipop is designed to work on all devices, making it easier to pick up where you left off. Google’s Material Design will be carried through all devices, bringing a similar experience.

The Lollipop release gives greater control including the ability to adjust settings so that only certain people and notifications are flagged. You can also respond directly from the lockscreen. This also extends to incoming phone calls which won’t interrupt what you’re watching or playing. You can choose to answer the call or just keep doing what you’re doing.

Google is also flagging a battery saver feature that will extend your device by 90 minutes and multiple user account on phones and guest modes. There is also Android Smart Lock that can secure your device by pairing it with a trusted device like your wearable or even your car.

Lollipop also brings support for 64 bit devices and on the camera side there is support for raw formats such as YUV and Bayer RAW. For a full list of features click here. On the developer side, Google has announced that the Android 5.0 SDK will be available on October 17th.
