Hyderabad: To address the drinking water needs of Krishna delta and Nalgonda districts, the Centre Water Commission (CWC) has directed Telangana government to release water from Nagarjuna Sagar and Alimineti Madhava Reddy projects respectively.

The decision was taken at the CWC meeting with representatives of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments here on Thursday. Principal Secretary (Irrigation) B Aravind Reddy and Engineer-in-Chief Muralidhar Rao (from Telangana) and Principal Secretary (Irrigation) Adityanath Das and Engineer-in-Chief Venkateshwara Rao expressed their view at the meetings. Engineering heads from Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam projects and districts that come under project purview also took part.
In view of scanty rainfall, CWC chairman AB Pandya felt that first priority should be given to address drinking water needs of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states. For this purpose he suggested release of water from Nagarjuna Sagar right canal to Krishna delta and from AMRP to Nalgonda.

Andhra Pradesh delegation is learnt to have insisted on release of 2.8 tmcft water to Krishna delta since 7.2 tmcft was already released in two phases. It may be mentioned here that they initially sought 10 tmcft of water to meet drinking water needs of districts in Krishna Delta.

Meanwhile Telangana officials emphasised that water should be released to Krishna delta only after meeting the drinking water needs of fluoride affected Nalgonda district. However, the CWC chief suggested that officials should consider releasing water from Srisailam reservoir, if required, to meet the demand.

He further sought details of water released from Nagarjuna Sagar project in the last 10 years. He called upon engineering officials to engage in discussions to find a way out of any issue.

The meeting also discussed about setting up of Krishna River Management Board, the staff, facilities and financial resources required for it, besides technical and security issues relating to projects.

Meanwhile speaking to The Hans India, Telangana Principal Secretary Aravinda Reddy said 2.8 tmcft of water would be released from Nagarjuna Sagar project at the rate 6000 cusecs per day. Likewise 3 tmcft would be released from Madhava Reddy project to Nalgonda district, he said.
