Hyderabad: Telangana State Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy visited the Cherlapally Jail here on Monday and took stock of the reforms and welfare activities of the prisoners.

He spent about two hours inside the prison by interacting with the jail inmates and making an appraisal of welfare activities, security arrangements and machines used by the prisoners in different departments. The Minister also enquired about the prisoners who were undergoing treatment at the jail hospital. “We will ensure that four vacant positions of the doctors are filled immediately so that treatment at the jail would not take a backseat,” he said.

The Minister also visited the workshops where bed linen, carpets, phenyl and other items were manufactured by the jail inmates. The Home Minister said modern equipment would be installed at the cost of Rs 10 crore so as to produce goods in a fast and easy manner which would in turn generate revenue for the betterment of prisoners.

Talking to the media persons, he said, “The cases of the convicts who are serving 10 and 15 years jail terms would be reconsidered after consulting with the Chief Minister and the jail authorities. The conduct of the prisoners would be taken into consideration for reducing their terms of imprisonment.”

With an aim to improve the quality of food, the Minister instructed the superintendent of the jail to ensure that the inmates were provided with good food. Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services V K Singh, IGP (Prisons) Chandrasekhar and Chanchalguda Jail SP K C Srinivas Rao were present on the occasion.
