Hyderabad: President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday called upon the lawyers to play a vital role in ensuring public access to justice and making the Constitution a living reality.

President Pranab Mukherjee, accompanied by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and Governor E S L Narasimhan, at the 12th Convocation of NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad on Saturday

Addressing the 12th convocation of NALSAR University, the President said educational institutions imparting legal education have to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications. They have to ignite enquiry and encourage curiosity.

“The study of legal system cannot be pursued in isolation from the wider socio-economic realities. Legal education should be seen by students and practitioners much beyond than a means of livelihood. It must encourage them to constantly think about how their actions will affect the common man,” he said.

He hoped that the leading law schools would encourage their students to not merely learn the content of law but to also assess their rationale, the consequences of their implementation and constructive suggestions for their reform.

He appreciated the efforts made by NALSAR in the last two years to diversify its curriculum by offering more elective courses, giving students greater academic flexibility. He stated that NALSAR was a one-of-its-kind law university in the country which has choice-based credit policy in the true sense.

He also congratulated NALSAR for introducing large number of electives and innovative courses such as MBA in Court Management, MBA in Innovation & Sustainability, Masters in Aviation Law and Masters in Telecommunication Laws.

He encouraged the students to work towards social justice, defend fundamental rights and civil liberties of the marginalised. Citing Granville Austin, he remarked that Constitution of India was the finest document to understand national integration, responsible democracy and ushering social revolution.

Prof Faizan Mustafa, the Vice-Chancellor of the University presented the report of the University highlighting the achievements of its students and the faculty members.
