Hyderabad: Around 2,000 delegates from around 50 countries will debate on various challenges to urbanisation at the five-day XI Metropolis World Congress which begins on Monday. Hyderabad, with its rich culture, tradition, social equity, economic prosperity and demographic dividend, would serve as a reference to brainstorming sessions on such pertinent topics as housing for all, urban India, metropolitan governance.

This is the first major event in the new State of Telangana state, where urbanisation is nearly 44 per cent.

Metropolis would serve as a forum to exchange ideas and developments. It is a platform to discuss issues of common interest of cities in terms of development and urban governance.

At a session titled ‘Voice of Children, children from different cities in India would speak about their problems.

The Metropolis Hyderabad Urban Hackathon would attempt to find solutions using social innovation with digital technology for a wide range of areas such as sanitation and waste management, roads and infrastructure, house numbering, traffic management etc. The Indian School of Business (ISB) in association with GHMC, Government of Telangana and XI Metropolis World Congress is conducting the Hackathon. In the evening, the delegates would be taken to Taramati Baradari where artists from Telangana have been camping for an art camp which would conclude at 8 pm. Art works from the camp would be showcased at the Metropolis Congress.

Different subjects of metropolis cities would also be discussed during the meet, including 100 smart cities, health in cities, housing and satellite cities. The Congress also has a special agenda on issues such as women, green buildings. Over 2,000 delegates, including 400 participants from 50 countries, will attend the international forum for exploring issues and concerns common to all metropolitan regions.

Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan will inaugurate the Congress on October 7 which will be attended by Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao among other dignitaries.


President Pranab Mukherjee will address the valedictory function scheduled on October 9. Mayors of several member-cities like Johannesburg, Barcelona, Berlin, Tehran among others, technocrats, administrators and experts will be part of the discussions.

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam would deliver the keynote address on 'Of the People, By the People, For the People' at a plenary session to be moderated by former Defence Research and Development Organisation chief V K Saras- wat. Nobel Peace Prize winner Rajendra Pachauri will speak on 'The Politics of Climate Change and Global Cities'.
