Thanks to the Dasara holidays and the XI Metropolis World Congress held in the city, the number of visitors to the Charminar has seen a quantum jump in the last fortnight. On an average, close to 5,000 tourists, including foreigners, visit the historic monument daily but in the last 15 days the number of visitors has touched 8,000 - 10,000 per day. However, the security gadgets installed and the number of people manning the monument is far from satisfactory.
Handheld detectors are not used by the security personnel. A security guard said that it was not possible to use the device all the time.
V Gopala Rao, conservation assistant, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), says, “There is an installed metal detector and handheld detectors have been provided to the security personnel. If there is a doubt after someone passes through the metal detector, the security staff uses the handheld device.”
Moinuddin, a tourist guide, says, “The staff is inadequate to handle such huge footfalls, especially when school children are brought to see the monument.”
At present six people are on duty during daytime and overall there are 15 security personnel including supervisors. A senior official of the ASI said, “The staff is not enough as the security personnel are used for both Charminar and Golconda Fort.”
A member of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) says, “Charminar and the Golconda Fort are vying for World Heritage status. With such facilities how does ASI expect the status?”
V Gopala Rao says, “Another issue is the lack of parking space. The traffic police themselves park their vehicles in front of the monument. There is hardly any space for tourists.”
“Be it encroachments or any other issue, the state government has to provide assistance in order to maintain the structure. The ASI can only issue a notice for the same,” rued an official.
