Hyderabad: In a heartrending incident, a woman whose husband immolated self for achieving separate State during the Telangana movement allegedly attempted suicide on Tuesday as she could not find her husband’s name in the official list of martyrs.

The woman, Sabitha, hailing from Vikarabad in Ranga Reddy district was said to be in depression as her husband Pradeep’s name was missing from the official list of martyrs released by the Telangana government.

Stating this at a press conference, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) vice-president Mohammed Ali Shabbir said on Wednesday Sabitha, attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills. Her husband Pradeep was among the martyrs who laid down their lives for the cause of statehood. After the formation of Telangana State, Sabitha was even honoured by the Ranga Reddy Collector, he said.

Sabitha, the TPCC vice president said, was a poor woman and was shocked to see that her husband's name was missing from the official list. She felt that this would deprive her of getting Rs 10 lakh financial assistance declared by the government. She went to the Tehsil office to enquire about the reasons for non inclusion of her husband's name from the list of martyrs. Unable to find an answer, she returned home disappointed and attempted suicide, Shabbir said.

He demanded that the State government should order re-verification of martyrs' list and include the names of all those who laid down their lives for the cause of statehood. The government should assure the families of martyrs that they would be given promised financial assistance to prevent recurrence of incidents like the one that happened in Vikarabad, Shabbir added.
