Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s decision to affect a steep hike in salaries of MLAs and MLCs is likely to be put on hold for some time with the Committee for Amenities expressed that it was not the right time.
Members of different parties, who attended the Amenities Committee meeting held in Speaker’s chamber on Tuesday, aired their views.
It may be mentioned here that KCR proposed enhancement up to nearly Rs 2 lakh to MLAs and MLCs who were presently getting Rs 95,000 as salary plus allowances.
The meeting was chaired by Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy which was attended by Council Chairman K Swamy Goud, Finance Minister Eatala Rajender, Legislative Affairs Minister T Harish Rao, Koppula Eshwar (TRS), P Sudhakar Reddy (TRS), Santosh Kumar (Congress), C Ramachandra Reddy (BJP), Akbaruddin Owaisi (MIM), Ravindra Kumar (CPI), Sunnam Rajaiah (CPI-M) and T Venkateshwarulu (YSR Congress). All of them, it is learnt, expressed the opinion that the issue should be put on hold for some time.
Though not opposed to the hike decision, MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi felt that it was not the right time since state was passing through difficult phase. He suggested the government to get details of salaries and allowances given to legislators in other States and then decide.
BJP member C Ramachandra Reddy stated that travel expenses for legislators hailing from rural areas was far more when compared to legislators like him representing urban constituencies. The existing allowances were not sufficient, he said.
CPI leader Ravindra Kumar sought to double the car allowance from existing Rs 10 lakh. A legislator like him from left-wing background found it difficult to buy a car that costs around Rs 15 to Rs17 lakh, he said.
MLC P Sudhakar Reddy pointed out that the hike decision was the need of the hour since TRS party vowed to root out corruption at all levels. It was difficult to expect personal and office staff of ministers and legislators to work with commitment if they were not paid well, he said.
There was also a demand to increase the salary given to PAs of MLAs since no retired employee was willing to work for Rs 6000 presently fixed by the government.
Ministers, Eatala Rajender and Harish Rao, who patiently heard views expressed by all members, stated that they would take their opinions to the notice of the Chief Minister.
