TRS, Congress leaders bring pressure to bear on him

Nalgonda: Development works in Nalgonda Municipality have come to a grinding halt and Muncipal Commissioner Venugopal Reddy has gone on long leave following a row between the Congress and TRS leaders. The TRS and the Congress leaders are competing with each other in dictating terms to the officials and elected councillors.

The TRS are insisting that the development works should be carried out in accordance with their wishes. The Congress leaders are demanding that the officials carry out their orders only because the people in the town voted for their party. The Municipality has owned a shopping complex comprising 238 shops. The officials estimate that the revenue from the shopping complex should be as high as Rs 3 crore a month. But the actual receipts are not exceeding Rs 21 lakh a month, according to sources.

Venugopal Reddy

After Venugopal Reddy assumed charges as Municipal Commissioner last year, he started focussing his attention on plugging loopholes and ensuring that revenue due to the civic body was accrued. He planned to increase the rents for the shops. But the measures he had taken were not to the liking of both TRS and the Congress leaders.

They brought pressure to bear on the Commission to abandon his plan either to increase rents for shops or auction them afresh. Apart from it, some persons have been construction mansions without paying lay-out charges and other development levies to the Municipalities. The leaders created obstacles to the Commissioner in forcing those constructing mansions without plans to pay penalties and demolish them in some cases.

As if this was not enough, the TRS and the Congress councillors questioned the Commissioner at council meetings why he had failed to take action against irregularities. All these developments had ultimately led to the Commissioner going on a long leave for 15 days. Venugopal Reddy met the District Collector before going on leave. He also surrendered the mobile SIM too to the in-charge commissioner.
