Hyderabad: Superstar Amitabh Bachchan was conferred with the 9th ANR National Award at a glittering function at Annapurna Studios here on Saturday. The actor was presented the coveted award “for his decades of dedication to Indian cinema”. The award, instituted by late Akkineni Nageswara Rao in 2005, is an annual presentation that recognises people for their contribution to the Indian cinema. Previous awardees are Dev Anand, ShabanaAzmi, Anjali Devi, Vyjayantimala Bali, LataMangeshkar, K Balachander, HemaMalini, and ShyamBenegal.

Receiving the award, Bachchan, 72, expressed his gratitude and said, “It is legends like ANR who have given the film industry dignity, respectability and grace. Though he was a great actor, it was his simplicity in life that was his most attractive trait. Cinema has become a parallel culture of our country and just like ANR had said, it is through cinema that we should give whatever we can to the people.”

He told Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao that he was ready to help in anyway for the development of the new State. “If my voice or face can be of any use to your State, I will definitely be of service,” he informed. The award ceremony saw KCR as the chief guest who described Bachchan’s grace and talent as everlasting. “Amitabh Bachchan has not just acted, rather he has lived in every role he was offered.”

Venkaiah Naidu, the guest of honour, described Bachchan as “a tall man not just in terms of height, but also in terms of his talent.” Apart from the Akkineni family, several distinguished guests from the film fraternity – Chiranjeevi, Paruchuri Brothers, Rana Daggubati, Samantha, Rakul Preet Singh, Lavanya Tripathi – graced the event.
