Make Haritha Haaram a grand success, Minister for Environment and Forests Jogu Ramanna said on Tuesday that the state government would be organising Haritha Haaram scheme as a prestigious programme.

Khammam: Minister for Environment and Forests Jogu Ramanna said on Tuesday that the state government would be organising Haritha Haaram scheme as a prestigious programme. He gave a call to people to extend cooperation for making Haritha Haaram programme a grand success. He said that the Telangana government is taking measures for the development of forests.

Earlier, Jogu Ramanna arrived at the Guest House of Roads and Buildings Department. District Collector Dr K Ilambarithi welcomed him with a bouquet. Ilambarithi explained to the Minister about the progress made in implementation of various welfare schemes in the district especially Haritha Haaram.

Speaking to the media, Jogu Ramanna said that forest cover has declined in the state over the years.

“Decrease in forest cover is resulting in scanty rainfall,” he added.

He stated that Khammam district is in first place with more than 50 per cent area covered by forests followed by Adilabad district. He explained that smugglers have looted forest resources due to faulty policies of previous state governments.

Jogu Ramanna said that the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has taken up Haritha Haaram scheme as a prestigious programme. “It was decided to raise 4 crore saplings in nurseries across the district as part of the programme,” he added.

He pointed out that the state government would conduct Haritha Haaram Week in July 2015 across the state in order to plant saplings in a big way. He said he would inspect nurseries at Khammam, Karepally, Yellandu, Kothagudem and Bhadrachalam on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Jogu Ramanna, who is also holding BC Welfare portfolio, said that the state government would strengthen BC study circles to prepare students for competitive exams by providing coaching with experts on par with private institutions. He informed that there are 294 BC welfare hostels in the district and out of which 125 are not having permanent buildings. He said that steps would be taken for construction of permanent buildings very soon.

Later, Jogu Ramanna planted saplings at a nursery managed by Forest Department at Tekulapally in Khammam urban mandal.

Wyra MLA B Madan Lal, MLC Balasani Lakshminarayana, Conservator of Forests B Anand Mohan, District BC Welfare Officer Venkata Narasaiah and other officials were present.
