Sircilla (Karimnagar): With the state government not releasing the subsidies for the textile industries in the district, more than 20 units have been shut down in the textile park at Sarampalli village of Sircilla mandal, the only textile park situated in the Telangana State. As a result, more than 3,000 workers have been thrown out of jobs and are facing immense hardships in meeting ends.
- 3,000 workers badly hit
- They appeal to govt to save them from starvation deaths
Although the Textile Park was started in 2004 and 136 industries were set up during the past 10 years, the industrialists were running these firms facing several hurdles as they lacked basic infrastructure facilities. Unable to clear the bank loans, as many as 20 industries were shut down.
The businessmen were angry that the government remained indifferent to their plight, though they brought their problems to the notice of the government several times. Speaking to the media here on Friday, one of the industrialists Annal Das Anil said that neither the previous governments in the undivided Andhra Pradesh nor the TRS government in the Telangana State took any initiative to resolve their problems though they submitted memoranda to them several times in the past.
He said though the Information Technology Minister K Taraka Rama Rao, who hails from the district and represents the Karimnagar Assembly constituency, is fully acquainted with the problems of the industries, but he remained indifferent. Another industrialist B Sudarshan said the Central government agreed to release 20 per cent subsidy and the State government 20 per cent subsidy when the Textile Park was set up and several industrialists came forward to start industries in the district.
However, the State government backed out and failed to release its share of 20 per cent. As a result, unable to clear the bank loans by paying heavy interests, many industries were forced to shut down, he lamented. He said that industrialists were facing heavy losses as the government had refused to pay the 50 per cent subsidy on electricity that it promised when the textile park was established.
As such, they were not in a position to run these industries any longer and they were forced to shut down. One of the workers Praveen Kumar said they were almost starving ever since the industries were closed down and appealed to the government to resolve the crisis and save their families from starvation deaths.
