Hyderabad: Telangana State would carry out repairs to about 5,135 roads as part of the developing roads at an estimated cost of Rs 1,228 crore. Speaking at a press conference here on Saturday, Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said that post bifurcation there were about 26,986 kms of National and State highways in the State.

To connect mandals with the district headquarters, the Minister said Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao earmarked Rs 2,585 crore, which covers 1996 kms of roads in the State by developing them into two-way roads. Similarly, there was a proposal to develop four-lane roads between districts and the State head quarters.

He pointed out that in particularly there were no four-lane roads connecting Nizamabad and Khamma districts to the State headquarters, and plans were drafted, he said. Besides, Rs 674 crore were released to develop the road between Suryapet and Khammam, and another Rs 100 crore for the development of the roads between Ditchpalli and Nizamabad, Nageswara Rao said.

Similarly, repairs would be taken up for 349 narrow and dilapidated bridges over rivers Krishna and Godavari at an estimated cost of Rs 1,974 crore. Plans were being designed keeping in view the proposed ring roads around important towns like Warangal, Khammam, Nizamabad, and Gajwel. Administrative sanction had been given to Rs 30 crore.
