Asks Centre to declare Pranahita Chevella as national project

New Delhi: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the Pranahita-Chevella Lift Irrigation Project as national project and to extend 50% of financial assistance to the state’s pet projects of Mission Kakatiya and Water Grid.

KCR is keen on getting national project status to Pranahita-Chevella as the state government suspects that the Central Water Commission may give negative report on it saying the project is not feasible citing power crisis, technical issues and the high cost of the project which is estimated at Rs 40,000 crore.

KCR, who met the Prime Minister at his residence for almost 40 minutes on Monday, discussed with him the political issues, and the rift with Andhra Pradesh over Krishna waters from Nagarjuna Sagar. On Sunday, AP Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu met the PM for half hour.

According to sources, KCR has also asked the Prime Minister to show considerate attitude towards the new and the backward state of Telangana by providing tax incentives and granting special status to the backward districts or by announcing an area specific financial package. At this meeting, KCR also sought new power transmission line to Dichpally via Wardha from Maharashtra so that the state can have access to power line to get power from the Eastern Grid substantiating that the state is facing severe electricity deficit.

The thorny issues of sharing electricity/power and river waters between the Telugu-states also figured in the meeting. The demand for a separate High Court for Telangana also figured in the meeting. KCR cited that in the newly-created states of Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, High Courts were established without any delay and asked for the speedy bifurcation of the AP High Court. At the moment, the High Court in Hyderabad is adjudicating authority for both the states but Telangana wants to have its own at the earliest.

The once-in-12 years Godavari Pushkaralu slated to take place in Bhadrachalam beginning on July 14 also figured in the meeting. KCR sought financial assistance for the same. The meeting between KCR and PM gave credence that TRS may join the BJP government when the Cabinet expansion and reshuffle takes place.
