Hyderabad: Justice Vilas Afzulpurkar of the High Court at Hyderabad on Wednesday disinclined to stop the police from interfering with playing of cards in clubs. Various clubs, including Chiran Fort, moved the High Court questioning the action by the city police in closing the card games in clubs as rummy (a 13 card game).The petitioners cited the Supreme Court ruling that the rummy was not entirely of chances and was also skilled game.

The government pleader, however, cited the Madras High Court ruling permitting the police to exercise powers under the Chennai Police Act to prohibit and prevent gambling. The Supreme Court had restricted its ruling to those petitioners who filed an appeal. In the present case, the government pleader said, the police had invoked the Hyderabad Gambling Act and closed the card rooms.
