Official records show that there is no improvement for Telangana farmers’ prospects during the rabi season as a quarter of the normal cropped area was not covered due to acute shortage of water resources. For the new state, the average cropped area is about 13 lakh hectares.

An Official from the Agriculture department said that of the 13 lakh hectares, farmers could sow in 9.50 lakh hectares. But with farmers growing the crop only in 66 per cent of the average area of 6.50 lakh ha, paddy has been hit very hard said the official.


Maize, generally grown in 1.52 lakh ha has seen a marginal increase of 1.60 lakh ha. Growing in 22, 0000 ha against the normal area of 15, 000 ha, Green gram too registered an increase. But Food Grain crops witnessed a fall of 25 percent at 7.60 lakh ha against the average area of 10.41 lakh ha.
