10,000 crore sought for pending projects in Khammam district

Khammam: Ahead of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s proposed tour of Khammam district, the CPM demanded that the government should make its stand clear on podu lands that have been tilled by tribal and Dalit community people for the last 20 years.

Speaking at a party meeting presided over by senior leader Macha Venkateswarlu here on Tuesday, district committee secretary P Sudarshan Rao criticised the government for turning a blind eye to the hardships faced by the tribals and Dalits. “The suppressive measures adopted by the officials of forest and revenue departments against the Adivasis are condemnable and are against the spirit of forest laws,” Rao said, demanding the government to stop razing of crops on podu land in the name of Harita Haram programme.

Though the successive governments have claimed that they were committed to distributing lands to landless poor, in reality it was far from truth, he said, demanding KCR to make an announcement during his visit to the district later this month. He alleged that the government which acquired land in Manuguru for the proposed power plant had failed to provide compensation to farmers.

Stating that the district got a raw deal in the recent State budget, Rao demanded Rs 10,000 crore to expedite the works of pending irrigation projects in the region. Senior leaders Buggaveeti Sarala, Nunna Nageswara Rao, Ponnam Venkateswarlu, A J Ramesh, Yerra Srikanth, K Venkateswar Rao and Lingala Kamal Raj were among others present.
