Farmers decry move to shift Pranahita-Chevella project

Farmers Decry Move To Shift Pranahita Chevella Project. The reported move of the Telangana State government to change the design and shift the Pranahita-Chevella project from Adilabad on the advice of the Maharashtra government, and deciding to construct it at Kaleshwaram in Karimnagar district has come under fire from the farmers.
Adilabad: The reported move of the Telangana State government to change the design and shift the Pranahita-Chevella project from Adilabad on the advice of the Maharashtra government, and deciding to construct it at Kaleshwaram in Karimnagar district has come under fire from the farmers.
The then Congress government headed by the late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had decided to build the Pranahita-Chevella project to make Adilabad lush with greenery and also spent Rs 4,500 crore on it till now. If the project is completed, 1.50 lakh acres of agricultural land could be irrigated. However, the Maharashtra government asked the Telangana State government to ensure that the villages in Maharashtra are submerged on account of the Pranahita-Chevella project and suggested that it may be shifted to some other place. As a result, the government is toying with the idea of constructing it at Kaleshwaram.
Now, the farmers of Adilabad are furious at the government and if the project was shifted from Chevella with a change in the design, it would not be possible to provide water to even one acre of land in their district. The entire money spent on the Pranahita-Chevella project would go down the drain.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Saturday, farmers leader Bandi Dattadri accused the TRS government of indulging in “dirty politics” by shifting the project. He said if the Pranahita Project was constructed according to the new design at Kaleshwaram, it would be 130 km away from Chevella and it would be difficult to supply water for irrigation purposes in the backward Adilabad district. The farmers here would be badly hit by water scarcity, he said and added that even Yellampalli would not get any water if the design was changed.
Dattadri said the Chief Minister K Chandrashekara Rao wanted to change the design of the project, so that he could supply water to his home district, Medak. He said severe injustice would be done to the Adilabad farmers and they would oppose the government’s move tooth and nail. He said farmers in the district were ready to launch an agitation to force the government to reverse its decision.
