Hyderabad: Incessant rain accompanied by heavy gales that lashed several parts of Telangana since Saturday caused widespread damage to the standing paddy crops and horticulture, particularly mango, in nine districts (excluding Hyderabad) of Telangana.

According to the officials of the Agriculture department, crops have been damaged in over 40,130 hectares of which paddy crop alone consists of 26,632 hectares in Warangal, Nalgonda, Medak, Ranga Reddy, Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar and Nizamabad districts. The officials said with meteorological office predicting more rain the extent of the damage to the crops could increase.

Enumeration work has been taken up by the department in all the rain hit districts. Other crops such as bajra (3235), maize (1475), jowar (933) and green gram (51 hectares) were also damaged due to rains. The Horticulture officials said mango crop has been damaged in 29,000 hectares out of 35,000 hectares. The officials said vegetable crops were damaged in 4320 hectares, banana orchards were uprooted in 817 hectares, papaya (650) , sweet orange (55) grapes (37 ) , flowers (42) and cashew were damaged in eight hectares.

The damage of turmeric in Adilabad district is yet to be assessed. The officials said once the completion of the final enumeration was over, the government would announce the relief measures it proposes to extend to the affected farmers. All Markfed centres have been asked to make arrangements to purchase discoloured Paddy.

Meanwhile, Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, who inspected the fields at Sivareddygudem village in Pochampalli mandal in Nalgonda district said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was keen on extending compensation to the farmers, who lost their crop due to the recent rains. He assured the farmers that he would make all possible efforts to see that every aggrieved farmer gets adequate compensation without discrimination on party lines.

The minister also said his visit was purely on the orders of the Prime Minister and has nothing to do with politics since it was a natural disaster. Telangana State BJP president M. Kishan Reddy, Bhongir MP Bura Narsaiah Goud and others accompanied. Union Minister of State for Labour & Employment Bandaru Dattatreya visited the unseasoned rain affected farmers of Karimnagar & Nizamabad districts and assured maximum assistance from the Union government to all the affected farmers in Telangana state.
