Hyderabad: If rumours doing the rounds are to be believed, a senior leader from the non Reddy community will take up the mantle of the Telangana BJP very soon. As the incumbent State party unit President G Kishan Reddy is being relieved from his responsibility in two months, the party high command has dropped hints that the new party chief will be chosen from the BC community. Interestingly some leaders from Velama community are also trying their luck.
Many senior leaders are making a beeline to BJP national president Amit Shah’s office to lobby for the post. From Velama community – BJP national secretary P Muralidhar Rao is the front runner. A majority in the party is of the opinion that the State chief should hail from rural Telangana from a Backward Community (BC).
According to party sources, despite some minor differences, the search is on for a leader from rural region. No leaders for from either Hyderabad or Ranga Reddy are being considered. As the party has no strong base in Adilabad and Khammam districts, the leader will be chosen from the remaining six districts of Telangana. The sources the BJP is trying to get rid of its 'urban oriented party' image.
The party leadership is of the opinion that if the party's base at the rural level is strengthened by bringing in a BC candidate, they have bright chances of filling the political vacuum in the state. Unlike TDP, TRS and the Congress, the BJP is trying to move away from the brand of a single community dominated party.
The BJP will be electing a non Hyderabadi as State president after a decade. The last non-Hyderabad party chief was Ch Vidyasagar Rao in 1998. After him Bandaru Dattatreya had two terms, N Indrasena Reddy had one term and the current president G Kishan Reddy is about to complete his term in November.
