Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that as the cities generate almost 50 percent of total revenues in the country, hence they could be developed by increasing municipal taxes.


He said that more urban areas could be developed if the revenues were increased further. Addressing a national conference on smart technologies in Hyderabad on Saturday, Mr Naidu said that the country's economic growth was linked to the development of cities.


Informing that the list of 100 smart cities would be released by September 1, Mr Naidu said that the initial 20 cities would be taken up on priority. Venkaiah Naidu and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan inaugurated a building for the Bureau of Indian Standards at Moula Ali and announced that a testing laboratory would be set up in the city soon.
